Hi everyone,
Welcome to the third poetry newsletter of 2021! I hope the world has been kind to you this week <3
Monday
I have a moss candle I like to burn. The scent is very much like freshly-cut grass, and even though I wasn't a fan at first, it really grew on me. Now it's how I like my room to smell, especially if I’m distressed or just looking for calm. That was how the poem started, thinking about my candle, about what it meant to me, especially in the context of covid-19 and the lockdown.
Tuesday
I’m in the middle of putting a research proposal together for my dissertation, and I wrote this to express my frustrations at the research process, at what counts as real knowledge in academia.
Wednesday
It’s not my job to wade through anyone’s uncertainty of me. That’s somethingI’ve had to learn to protect my self-esteem. I believe that at the end of the day, if someone is determined in their want/love for you, it'll show up in ways you can't turn a blind eye to. That's what I want! Something solid.
Thursday
I started watching Fleabag and I’m obsessed! Although I am taking a break, the episode that inspired this poem was a little too intense for me. Anyways I do love the priest, but I’m pretty firm on my stance that if anyone tells you they're celibate, respect it.
Friday
Witches. Women. Misogyny.
Saturday
I spent the afternoon reading ‘Red at the Bone’ by Jacqueline Woodson and it inspired this poem, particularly the word ‘not-tellings’. I don't remember the page, but it stuck with me. It was beautifully written and I really recommend it.
Sunday
Thank you for reading! Let me know which poem was your favourite this week, or if you have any thoughts! I really appreciate the feedback.
Have a wonderful week!
With Love,
Oyinda
